The Endowed Taconite Chair, established to advance Minnesota’s globally significant iron ore industry, is a senior research leadership position charged with driving long-term innovation in minerals and mineral-related research. The Chair leads an exploratory research program that integrates metallurgy, mineral processing, materials, and ecosystem considerations while building strategic partnerships across industry, government, and academia. In addition, the Chair mentors early-career scientists, attracts significant external funding, and helps shape NRRI’s strategic research agenda.

“I am extremely pleased to announce that Dr. Brett Spigarelli has been appointed NRRI’s Endowed Taconite Chair,” said Dr. Rolf Weberg, NRRI Executive Director. “Brett’s leadership, expertise and vision will be invaluable as we pursue innovative solutions with industry, agency, academic, and community partners to chart the course for Minnesota’s and the nation’s minerals-related industries.”

Spigarelli has served as a Research Scientist at the Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) since 2017, where his work centers on advancing process innovations in the iron and steel sector. His research supports the development of value-added products, helping to strengthen Minnesota’s role in the domestic minerals industry.

“I am honored to carry forward the legacy of this position,” said Spigarelli. “Minnesota’s mineral resources are foundational to our region and to the nation, and I look forward to working with colleagues and partners to ensure we use them wisely, sustainably, and innovatively.”
