  • A recently-released paper from five national labs spotlights Minnesota as having the critical attributes for hydrogen-based steel and ammonia production that could potentially be cost-competitive with traditional steelmaking processes by 2035. This paper is the foundation for MITI.

MITI Funding Awards

Feasibility Study: Pre-FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) for Green Iron Plant 

NRRI received $1.34M from the DOE Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Technology Office to examine the feasibility of constructing a hydrogen-based direct reduced iron plant in northern Minnesota. It represents a first step toward a low-carbon, secure domestic supply of iron for the U.S. steel industry, leading to innovations applied to other carbon-intensive industries.
