Project Management

Program Overview

The Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) has a 35 year history of delivering research on the local, state, federal, and international level.  During fiscal year 2020 (July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020), the NRRI had a sponsored research project portfolio totaling approximately $3.4M, of which $1.7M (51%) was funded through the State of Minnesota.  Projects at NRRI are managed directly through the Principal Investigator or a dedicated Project Manager, and are supported through NRRI’s Portfolio Management Office.

Project Management Training

Sixty four (64) principal investigators/project managers and key support staff at NRRI have completed internal Project Management training based on the Project Management Institute (PMI) Body of Knowledge methodology in 2020.

Support Staff

In addition to the NRRI’s Portfolio Management Office, there is also a team of support staff and administrators that support research projects; namely, Grants, Finance, Business Development, and Central Administration. There are more than ten full-time employees that support research in total.  Financial reporting for every grant occurs on a monthly basis by the NRRI Finance team and are verified by the Principal Investigator or Project Manager.  In addition to the resources held at NRRI, the University of Minnesota’s Sponsored Projects Administration, General Counsel, and University of Minnesota Duluth’s Office of Finance and Operations also support projects on behalf of the NRRI.
