The Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) is pleased to announce Dr. Joel Hoffman as its new Director of Research. Dr. Hoffman brings nearly two decades of experience leading scientific teams and demonstration support, engaging industry and other stakeholders and delivering actionable solutions to complex challenges with both regional and national significance.
Dr. Hoffman earned his BS in Resource Ecology and Management from the University of Michigan and his PhD in Marine Science from The College of William & Mary. He began his postdoctoral work in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes Toxicology and Ecology Division Laboratory in Duluth, ultimately serving as Chief of the Ecosystem Services Branch, where he led a team that influenced decision-making on critical environmental, natural resource management, social and economic issues across the Great Lakes and nationwide.
“I am excited to join NRRI and help our talented researchers deliver solutions that benefit society and strengthen Minnesota’s role in shaping national research and innovation,” said Dr. Hoffman.
In his new role at NRRI, Dr. Hoffman will provide strategic leadership for development of the NRRI research portfolio, guiding scientists and engineers to develop innovative solutions that address pressing challenges affecting communities, the environment, and the economy across Minnesota and the nation.
