NRRI Researcher 1: Environmental Analytical Chemist

The Researcher will work in the Applied Ecology & Resource Management group at NRRI and provide laboratory support to research projects related to legacy and emerging environmental contaminants, water quality, and water treatment. They will follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) to perform routine analytical chemistry and biochemistry laboratory techniques, including flash column chromatography, solid phase extraction, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) extraction. They will also assist with environmental sampling and fieldwork as necessary to support water- related research activities.  Position closing on October 2, 2021.

Job duties: 
  • Preparation of environmental samples for analysis of environmental contaminants, using routine laboratory techniques such as accelerated solvent extraction, flash column chromatography, and solid phase extraction.
  • Extraction of DNA from environmental samples.
  • General laboratory assistance, including cleaning and organizing, ordering supplies, and record keeping.
  • Review analytical data to ensure correspondence with quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) criteria.
  • Assist with Environmental sampling and fieldwork.
Required Qualifications:
  • BS/BA in Chemistry or related field
  • Completion of Analytical Chemistry coursework, including a practical laboratory component
  • Experience working in a laboratory setting
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail during routine laboratory work
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to work independently and with team members
  • Hand-eye coordination to carry out routine laboratory work, physical ability to transport compressed gas cylinders efficiently and safely
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and ability to pass University driving background check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience performing quantitative analytical techniques for analysis of trace levels of organic contaminants in environmental samples
  • Experience performing flash column chromatography and solid phase extraction
  • Experience operating analytical instrumentation, including gas chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
  • Experience with R studio or similar mathematical software
