About the Job

The Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) is seeking two undergraduate research assistants to contribute to ongoing environmental science, molecular biology, and engineering projects in the Environmental Microbiology & Biotechnology Lab. The successful applicants will help with completing laboratory processing/analysis of environmental samples and help with field work. 

This is a parttime position and the work location is NRRI facility 5013 Miller Trunk Highway.

Job Duties:

  1. Basic lab chores include glassware washing, materials preparation, and environmental sample preparation (such as filtration and preservation). (50%)
     
  2. Assist with laboratory processing and analysis, including DNA extraction, qPCR, and/or ion analysis of various media (water, sediment, soil) using analytical instruments (ion chromatography, spectrophotometry, PCR instruments, etc.) to measure contaminants and/or microbial characteristics of environmental samples. (30%)
     
  3. Occasional field work (sometimes in inclement weather conditions) may be required. The field site is vehicle accessible and trips will take place during regular working hours. (10%)
     
  4. Various other tasks dependent on abilities, interests, and needs of the group. (10%)

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Must be a registered student of the University of Minnesota and maintain the minimum number of required credits.
  • Organized & detail-oriented.
  • Reliable, self-motivated & able to work with minimal guidance.
  • Must provide their own transportation to NRRI. Please note that DTA buses do not provide service to NRRI.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle background check

Physical/Environmental Demands:

  • Office environment / no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands.

Specific physical requirements or environmental exposures:

  • Work in a biosafety level 2 laboratory setting with exposure to chemical and biological hazards. Physical strength for field sampling campaign (e.g., ability to lift ~50 Ib materials)
