Tom Petersen has over 40 years of working in the mining industry, namely specializing in mineral processing flowsheet development. He worked as a process engineer at Tilden participating in plant start-ups and optimization of the process. Tom worked 30 years for Cliffs Natural Resources holding positions of Empire Mine General Manager - VP, Assistant General Manager, Empire Pellet Plant Superintendent and Tilden Concentrator Superintendent. He was part of the Empire Mine Strategic Planning Team and also on the Michigan Iron Nugget Planning Team. Tom was an Independent Consultant for 12 years working in Michigan for the local mines on problem solving and process improvements.
Tom currently is the Technical Manager for Mineral Processing at the University of Minnesota Natural Resources Research Institute. Having the resources to explore the ideas he has fostered over the years is paramount to developing the lower cost, higher recovery oxidized iron flowsheet he has always believed possible is now becoming a reality. A believer in passing on his years of knowledge to the next generations of engineers is important to him and is also a reality at NRRI.
